ASHI vs. AHA BLS Certification: Which One Do Employers Actually Accept?
If you’re renewing your Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, you’ve probably run into two different names: ASHI and AHA. Both appear on legitimate BLS cards, both teach the same lifesaving skills — and yet a lot of healthcare workers aren’t sure which one their employer will accept. Here’s a clear, honest breakdown so you can renew with confidence and avoid paying for a card that gets turned down.
What is the AHA?
The American Heart Association (AHA) is the organization that develops the resuscitation science and guidelines most CPR and BLS courses are built on. AHA BLS is often considered the default in hospital settings, and many large hospital systems specifically require an AHA-issued card for clinical staff.
What is ASHI?
The American Safety & Health Institute (ASHI) is a nationally recognized accrediting body for CPR, BLS, and first aid training. ASHI-approved courses follow the same core resuscitation science published by organizations like the AHA, and ASHI cards meet OSHA requirements. ASHI is widely accepted across clinics, dental and pharmacy settings, EMS, allied health, fitness, and many healthcare employers.
So what’s the real difference?
For the skills you learn, very little — both follow current CPR and emergency cardiovascular care guidelines. The practical difference is which organization’s logo is on your card, and whether your specific employer requires one over the other.
Here’s the simple way to think about it:
- Most employers accept either ASHI or AHA BLS.
- Some hospitals, particularly large systems and certain credentialing departments, specifically require an AHA card.
- OSHA-driven and non-clinical roles (dental offices, pharmacies, fitness, childcare, workplace safety) almost always accept ASHI.
How to know which one you need
Before you renew, do one thing: check your employer’s exact requirement. Look at your facility’s credentialing or HR policy, or simply ask, “Do you require an AHA BLS card specifically, or is an ASHI card accepted?” That one question can save you time and money.
If your employer accepts ASHI — as most do — an online ASHI BLS renewal is the fastest, most affordable way to stay current. If your employer requires AHA specifically, you’ll want an in-person AHA BLS course.
Renewing your BLS in Arizona
At AZ ACLS, we make both paths easy:
- Online ASHI BLS recertification — $39, completed in about 39 minutes with a same-day card. Ideal if your employer accepts ASHI (most do).
- In-person AHA BLS — for groups of six or more, when your employer specifically requires an AHA card.
We’ve been certifying Arizona’s medical professionals since 2010, and our instruction comes from working emergency professionals — including a founder who’s been an Arizona firefighter since 2001. That real-world experience is why physicians trust us to train their own staff.
Not sure which card you need? Check with your employer first, then renew your BLS with AZ ACLS — online in minutes, or in person with your team.
